October Show at the Cannon Beach Gallery
Artist’s Marilyn Burkhardt and Liza Jones will be showing new work at the Cannon Beach Gallery from October 1 – November 2, 2009 with an opening reception on Saturday, October 3 from 6-8pm.
Burkhardt is known for her depictions of the animals that she shares her life with on a 160 acre homestead near Hebo, Oregon. These include a pit bull that she rescued from the Humane Society and a pair of draft horses, mother and daughter, that were left homeless after an animal shelter closed. Burkhardt also draws inspirations from the ocean, with whales and seals populating her prints alongside horses and dogs. Ocean animals have intense meaning for her, reflecting her reverence for all things of the sea.
Burkhardt studied printmaking at Atelier 17, in Paris, France and worked toward a MFA from the University of Oregon in printmaking. Burkhardt is drawn to experimental printmaking and has practiced a Japanese technique known as suminagasi in which pigments float in water creating a swirled effect.
Liza Jones will be showing a group of oil pastels from a new series entitled Invented Portraits. The colorful body of work is all on a small scale.Liza Jones is a well known North West print maker who resides in Manzanita, Oregon. Jones received her BFA in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MA in art and education from Columbia University, with post graduate studies conducted at Portland State University. Jones received the Purchase Award from the International Print Exhibition in 1997.
